Tide – yes, the laundry detergent – is the new hot item in the black market. Stores nationwide have reported increased thefts of the laundry detergent, so much so that they have started to take precautions, such as anti-theft tags or locking Tide bottles behind glass.
Law enforcement believe that the Tide thefts are connected to the drug trade, as customers for drugs have began paying in bottles of the detergent instead of cash. Authorities theorize that thieves have targeted Tide because:
- Most people need laundry detergent.
- Tide is a popular brand.
- Tide is expensive compared to other brands.
- Laundry detergent does not spoil.
