North Korea to Suspend Nuclear Activities… Until Starting them Again

Just two months after Kim Jong Il died, North Korea has taken steps necessary to halt nuclear activity in exchange for 240,000 metric tons of food aid. North Korea has also agreed to allow United Nations inspectors into their nuclear facilities.

Those who are paying attention may be noticing a pattern. In 2007 the US agreed to provide heavy fuel oil in exchange for a similar promise of nuclear disarmament. In 1991 North and South Korea had agreed on a nuclear free peninsula. North Korea then withdrew from that agreement in 1993. In 1995 North Korea agreed to abandon all of its nuclear programs in exchange for a light water reactor and a promise of non aggression from the US.
