How to Prepare Your HDTV for the Super Bowl

You spent a lot of money on your big fancy TV, so you should have the best possible viewing experience while watching the Super Bowl. Here is how to watch in style.

The first step is to clean your screen. Your LCD or plasma television should never be cleaned with chemicals or Windex. Get a soft dry cloth and remove the dust from the screen. For the little spots that are left dampen a small spot on the cloth and remove the spots with light pressure, then dry the area where the spot was. It will be easier to see the spots with the television off and looking at the panel from an angle.

Once the cleaning is done it’s time to turn on the TV and pick the right channel. The Super Bowl is on NBC this year, but experience shows at least some of you will tune into the low-definition NBC channel your content provider offers and then have your TV try to upscale it. Each cable or satellite operator is different but the smart ones have a coherent system. For example, on most Comcast networks if NBC is channel 3 then the high-definition channel will be 703. Make sure you are watching a high-definition feed or one of your party guests will make fun of you in front of all of your friends.

Now that you’re watching a HD channel you need to set your TV to show sports. Most newer televisions offer a frame smoothing feature for fast action that reduces motion blur. It’s typically touted as 120Hz or 240Hz technology, or a proprietary name like TruMotion. If you have this on during a normal show or movie it induces the soap opera effect, but for live sporting events it makes them look like they’re taking place directly in your living room. You may need to dig through advanced settings menus on your TV, but it’s worth it in the end.

Those are the basics and getting ready should only take a few minutes.
