Last Chance Charity Giving for 2011

You only have a few hours left to receive a tax deduction for making charitable contribution for 2011. Giving to charity not only can score you a little relief on your tax bill, but also makes the world a nicer place, but you all already know that. To qualify an organization must be a 501(c)(3) charity that is registered with the IRS. For further information see this IRS guide.

Here’s a few suggestions of great charities doing important work. I know you guys probably have plenty of your own, so please put links in the comments. Also, you can look at Charity Navigator if you want to make sure your donations are being spent wisely.

Malaria No More

Malaria No More is on a mission to end malaria deaths in Africa by 2015. They distribute mosquito nets, provide education, and work with community leaders to prevent the disease. They also do policy work to help create government initiatives to reach their goal.

The American Red Cross

Everyone donates to the Red Cross when a big disaster happens, but they help people in need every day. The Red Cross provides year-round relief for victims of fires and inclement weather. They also provide volunteer medical services at lots of public events. To have an organization that can rapidly deploy in times of need is expensive, and they are worth throwing a few dollars at.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation

Hate SOPA? Concerned about internet censorship? You need to support the EFF. They defend your free speech and privacy, and are a strong advocate for internet users on Capital Hill.

Doctors Without Borders

This group provides essential medical services in some of the most dangerous places on the world. The work they do is truly heroic, and they act when most others cannot. They also serve as an important source of information on the ground in many places the news media overlooks.

 Hire Heroes USA

An organization dedicated to assisting our veterans find jobs once they return home. The unemployment rate for vets is much higher than for the general population and we need to show our appreciation for the men and women coming home. These folks offer a variety of services to help returning soldiers get their lives back together.

Your Local Food Bank

We all know that times are really tough for many Americans and that more people face food insecurity. Local food banks are on the front line of the fight against hunger and they always need more help.
