Today in New York, Amazon.com is expected to launch its own tablet device. It is reportedly called the Kindle Fire.
It is expected to be a strong competitor against Apple’s iPad and iPad 2, which produced 75% of all tablets sold this year.
According to TechCrunch, in addition to surely being able to read Kindle e-books the Kindle Fire will:
- Be a 7-in backlit tablet that looks like the Blackberry Playbook, with a larger version to be released next year.
- Use a custom version of Android.
- Cost between $250 and $300, which may include free Amazon Prime membership.
- Be released during the second week of November.
Not to be outdone, Barnes & Noble is rumored to be releasing an updated version of their successful Nook Color next month. The Nook Color 2 is expected:
- To be built over Android 2.3 (Gingerbread).
- Have more streaming content and apps.
- Cost $250.
All very exciting! Apple better watch its back.
