Free Speech and Fathers’ Rights

An ex-boyfriend of a woman who is accused of aborting their baby is putting up quite a fuss, and doing it quite publicly.

Greg Futz of Alamogordo, NM put up a billboard of him holding an outline of an infant in response to his belief that his ex-girlfriend aborted his child she was carrying. Talk about a bitter ex!

The former girlfriend is suing Greg Fultz for violation of privacy and harassment.  A domestic court has recommended that the sign be removed.  The woman’s name is not named in any articles, nor is it posted on the billboard.

Whether or not you believe in a woman’s right to an abortion, this case brings up some interesting issues.  Futz is defending his billboard under the right of free speech.  It is a compelling argument to someone like myself who does not have a law degree.  After all, even the Westboro Baptist Church’s hateful speech has been protected by this right and upheld by the Supreme Court.  Another point — is Futz really invading her privacy as she is not named?  Or, is he really just having a discussion about Fathers’ rights?

Futz has vowed to fight the domestic court’s recommendation.  As you can see from the billboard’s endorsements, he has the backing of a lot of well-funded pro-life groups.  As someone who leans pro-life, I hope that this billboard could be used as a springboard for sane discussion about fathers’ rights.

I suspect that this billboard and subsequent trip through the courts will merely fan the flames of extremism on both sides.
