Recipe Sunday: Blood Orange and Jalapeno Margarita

Blood-orange-margaritaIt’s Labor Day weekend, and I know that you have lots to do – so I’m going to keep this very short.

Jalapenos and blood orange juice might sound like a slightly odd combination, but they’re not. In fact, they work so well together that I didn’t dare finish my drink.

Because I knew I’d want another, and another, and another.

And the night would have ended up with my husband in a head lock, while I screamed “I love you little f**ker!”

However, I’m sure some of you can handle tequila better than I can.

My favorite tequila story happened at a dinner party in the early 90’s. I was in my early 20’s working retail, while my dinner companions were all very accomplished and in their 30’s.

I was a little intimidated.

Somehow drinking stories came up, and a lovely soft spoken southern school teacher said that she just couldn’t drink tequila.

“Why?” I asked.

“Because every time I do, I end up naked,” she explained.

Best. Tequila. Story. Ever.

So get ready to shed some clothing during this unofficial last weekend of summer, and enjoy this tequila drink while you do it!

Blood Orange and Jalapeno Margarita

Makes 2 drinks.

Ingredients:

  • Ice
  • Kosher salt
  • 3 oz tequila, divided
  • 1 (11 oz) can of blood orange soda (I used San Pellegrino), divided
  • 2 teaspoons pickled jalapeno juice
  • Jalapeno (for garnish)

Instructions:

Gently wet the tops of two cocktail glasses with water. Pour kosher salt onto a plate, and gently turn the top of the glasses into the salt. Add ice to the glasses, and divide the tequila and blood orange soda between the two glasses. Add a teaspoon of jalapeno juice to each glass, and garnish with jalapeno.
