Ut male iudicari*

Before Phil Jackson ranted about bogus calls, before Sir Alex Ferguson got another five match ban for his outbursts and before Didler Drogba screamed into television cameras about a “motherfucking disgrace,” a Roman gladiator named Diodorus complained how a referee’s bad call cost him the match – on his epitaph.

Most gladiatorial epitaphs include details of the deceased’s professional life. This particlular tombstone was unusual, according to Professor Michael Carter of Brock University, because it told a story. Continue reading

Scenes from the Vancouver Riots

In some corners of this messed up planet we call earth people are taking to the streets to riot and set fire to things because their government is trying to kill them. In Vancouver, though, people took to the streets to riot and burn stuff because their government set up big screen TVs in the streets so they could watch their beloved Canucks play Boston in game 7 on the Stanley Cup finals. Let’s have a look at some of the video footage shall we? It’s a riot roundup!

National Crisis Averted: Miami Heat Lose the NBA Finals

Happy Deriving Pleasure in Millionaires’ Failures Day! I’m sure all of you are drinking your finest German beers and listening to David Hasselhoff records. There are parades and explosions and balloons everywhere.

A few jokes to get the festivities going:

Q: Why did LeBron James skip college?

A: Because he didn’t want to go to the finals

I asked LeBron for change for a dollar and he only gave me three quarters. Continue reading

College Football is Just Like Slavery

Yesterday the attorney representing disgraced slightly inconvenienced former Ohio State Quarterback Terrelle Pryor compared the NCAA rule book to slavery.

Terry James told Sirius/XM’s “Jason & The GM” Show (Yeah, I have no idea what that is either) that the former Buckeye has been given the full Kunta Kinte treatment.

Jim Tressel, Tattoo Parlors, and the Media

Depending on who you listen to, recently dismissed Ohio State coach Jim Tressel is either a snake who ran a dirty program that still couldn’t keep up with the SEC, or a decent man who went to great lengths to maintain the blissful ignorance needed to run a major college sports program. As with most debates involving two extremes, the truth likely lies somewhere in the middle, a place today’s media rarely shows in interest in exploring. Continue reading

Who Should Take Over at Ohio State?

If there’s any question about the dominant sport in America, consider this: On the day the NBA Finals begin and the eve of Stanley Cup Finals game 1, sports pages are consumed with a college football head coaching position. On June 1. Almost three months before the 2011 season begins. Such is life in big-time college football, and Ohio State is about as big-time as it gets. Continue reading

Liveblog of the UEFA Champions League Final

It’s live blog time! (Again!)

The finals of the UEFA Champions League between Manchester United and FC Barcelona starts this afternoon at 2:45ish. The English and Spanish domestic champions have 90 minutes to decide the best team in European football for the 2010-2011 UEFA season. Join me here as I opine on the game with gchat cameos from Botswana. Feel free to chime in with comments or questions, but not concerns.

The UEFA Champions League Final is sort of like our Super Bowl if we allowed other countries to play football. It’s like the World Series if it were truly a World Series. It’s like the BCS national Championship if we allowed teams from Idaho to play for the title. Continue reading

Liveblog of Game 7 of the NHL Eastern Conference Finals

Live blog time!

Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Eastern Conference Finals between the Boston Bruins and the Tampa Bay Lightning starts tonight at 8ET. For some reason, I’ve been given clearance to liveblog the game. As I often say when making terrible calls in Euchre: “Let’s see how this goes.”

Game 7: it’s what separates the highly-paid men who will continue playing from the other highly-paid men who will retire to their deluxe mansions.
