Every summer I buy green tomatoes. Every summer I say I’m going to deep fry them. Every summer I get randomly intimidated by the idea, and I don’t.

Every Christmas, my husband gives me a big bag of different types of dried chilies to play with. Anchos, guajillos, pasillas, etc. Having dried peppers on hand means that I can just throw them in the mortar and pestle to combine with other spices for a quick add-in of flavor.
Who has two thumbs and loves dried chilies? This woman!
But today I came up with an idea, and to make the idea work – I needed chipotles in a tart and spicy adobo sauce. However, I realized I didn’t have any.
‘Tis the season for summer parties. And this is a fun dish to bring to any gathering of friends and family. Smoky chorizo flavor is played up with a warm smoked paprika vinaigrette and fresh chives. Continue reading
This is my go-to lunch when I’m so hungry I can’t think straight. It’s easy, delicious, spicy, and there’s not much dangerous prep work.

So I decided to play with citrus, and that made me think of some lovely warming flavors – which led me to the spice drawer. Continue reading
‘Mixed drink’ because the word ‘cocktail’ sounds like it’s talking about sex, not drinks. Its etymology doesn’t help much. The word used to be an adjective describing a horse with a docked tail, and how it got to mean a mixed drink has something tenuous to do with adulterated spirits. There’s another story that they were named for egg-cups, the French word for which is ‘coquetier’. You choose. Continue reading
There are some condiments that I always need to have on hand. One of them is sesame oil. Do you have some leftover chicken you want to liven up? Boom! Sesame oil. Do you want a fun vinaigrette? Boom! Sesame oil.
And in this recipe, pork is rubbed with spices and finished with sesame oil. Bonus? Easy wasabi barbecue sauce.
