Friday Night DJ Party: The Twitch Mix

djcat

It’s been a while since I’ve hit the kids with some new music. Here’s a mix I put together with a bunch of bass/trap tunes. I used my Novation Twitch to mix this up, which is a great tool for glitchy bass and electro music. I’m still getting used to playing on it, but I think this one came out sounding pretty TURNT UP. Flashback Friday: Get the Party Started

The parents are out of town and you’re having a few friends over, read: passing out flyers at school about a “kegger” at your house. You’re putting together the playlist for the night. What is the song that you knew would get people fired up (or in some cases, blazed up)? Being part of the group of kids that would circle up and do what are now “old school” dance moves, It Takes Two was the jam. Continue reading

Flashback Friday: Crush Edition

notes-love (1)Inspired by a story that was shared of Crasstalk commenters reuniting following a particularly revealing Photo Phriday, I reflected on my junior high and high school crushes and the songs that I reminded me of them. Music can be so intrinsically tied to one person or period of time in our lives, that a song may instantly make your heart race and stomach flutter.

The skater boy from the eight grade had a wide smile, great calves, and the coolest clothes. A friend of ours had a half pipe in the backyard and I would sit and dream of our future while watching him do tricks after school. It was Dead or Alive’s Brand New Lover that I would sing in my head. I had not yet had any lovers, so how he could be my brand new lover was all just a matter of details but I just really wanted him to ask me to the dance. This dream never materialized. I Want You to Dress Sexy At My Funeral (A Codicil)

67743 (cropped)Do you still have that dress? You know the one I mean. Elegant, satiny, a little bit revealing. I was always asking you about it — even though you hardly ever wore the thing. Tell me it’s still in your closet.

Well, you can’t really tell me, of course — because I’m asking you here to wear it to my funeral. So I’m just going to assume you still have that dress. And that it still fits the way I remember. Continue reading

Star Trek vs Superman: A Tale of Two Trailers

Both Man of Steel, the Superman movie franchise reboot, and Star Trek released their third and possibly final full-length trailers. As a die-hard fan of both Superman and Star Trek, I cannot help but notice that these trailers present very divergent understandings of their respective source material. I look at both these trailers and think that both are visual feasts, but only the Man of Steel trailer gets the essence of the source material, while JJ Abrams’s Star Trek Into Darkness trailer highlights action and adventure, but precious little else to distinguish it from any other large-scale space opera. Future Shock – When James Brown was a Talk Show Host

The other day I was chatting with a friend of mine who’s a vinyl collector and die-hard James Brown fanatic. He mentioned to me a bootleg DVD he had of a long lost talk show called Future Shock that The Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown, hosted in Atlanta in the late 70s.

The show tapes are mostly gone and it has never been released on DVD. But sure enough, my boy was able to dig up some footage from Youtube, and well, it’s amazing in every way.  Continue reading

Brad Paisley and LL Cool J Come Together to Dismiss Racism with a Song

Music has often been a way for people to address complex issues or work through painful topics, with protest songs and songs about war often exposing people to new thoughts and ideas. But sometimes an idea fails so profoundly in its execution of cultural criticism that you literally cannot believe anyone thought this was a good idea. The Hairpin calls this song a “lyrical disgrace,” and they’re honestly correct. But the most appalling part is the idea that these issues are all things that happened a long time ago, and those of us today bear no responsibility for racism in our society. Continue reading
