Back in August I linked in one of the OTs to a story on Pitchfork about a long lost Daft Punk song that had been discovered. Initially intended to be released with “Rollin’ and Scratchin'” as Soma25, “Drive” wound being shelved in favor of the Daft Punk’s now classic tune, “Da Funk.” That was 1994. Flash forward to present day, and the long forgotten song was rediscovered as Soma was compiling its three disc Soma Records 20 Years retrospective. “Drive” is the first track on the Classics disc. Listen to the song after the jump. Continue reading

OK, since it seems like we have a lot of hungover Crasstalkers, I think we will do something a little mellow tonight. I don’t know much about Ambient, so this is a bit of a learning experience. Important note: The Grand Inquisitor is not interested in you telling her what does or does not qualify as Ambient, just listen to the music you nerds. Continue reading
Jarrod did a post about awful and annoying songs, which inspired bbqcornnuts to create a bad song contest. In the comments of that post, it became clear that there were some bad songs that we actually really liked, even though we acknowledged they were horrible. So bbqcornnuts and I came together to talk about those songs specifically, and here they are, some the bad songs we love.
Now, we’ve long discussed the conundrum that is the singing actor vs. the acting singer. Some can pull both off very nicely. We like it when NPH does it yes? Yes. We can even say that we like it when Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway take to crooning. So it’s a splendid thing when you get two really good actors who can also belt out a song. Did you know that Robert Downey Jr. is a halfway decent singer? Meaning if you didn’t know it was him, you wouldn’t think it was him. Here check it out. Then there is a list of actors who should really just pick one or the other. We could put J.Lo in that category. The bigger list, however, is the list of actors who just shouldn’t sing again ever. Ben Cohen isn’t the only one with a birthday today. Amy Winehouse would have turned 28 today. The Amy Winehouse Foundation launches today, and the video for Winehouse’s duet with Tony Bennett has also been released. Watch the video after the jump. Continue reading

Bruno Mars seems to be everywhere these days – his videos are on MTV, his songs are on pop radio, his face is on all manner of print ads. But what impact has he really made on the federal court scene? None, of course. Well, none until September 1st of this year.
Joseph Agnew was on a full football scholarship at Rice University when he suffered a career-ending injury after his sophomore season. The university informed him that he was no longer a member of the football team and therefore would no longer continue to receive his scholarship for the remaining two years at school. He applied for and received an additional year of tuition, even though he was no longer on the team. His request for full tuition for his senior year was subsequently denied and Mr. Agnew was forced to pony up his last year’s tuition out-of-pocket to recieve his degree. He sued claiming that two NCAA bylaws mandating one-year scholarships and scholarship caps for athletes were in violation of federal law.
I love hard music. Even when I was a little kid I favored loud drums and screaming guitars over sweet melodies and pretty words. As a teen I listened to MDC, The Circle Jerks, and the Dead Kennedys. As an adult I played the drums in a few bands and wrote songs full of angry, obscene words about shooting people in the face.
However, even the hardest of rockers sometimes need a little sweetness. I have a fairly large collection of sweet R&B ballads, weepy indie rock selections, and even a few soothing classical pieces to connect me to the more graceful side of music. This is all justifiable in the name of eclectic taste. However, there is no amount of rationalization that can really ever erase my shame over my absolute adoration of bubblegum rock. Tonight I’m rocking the wheels of steel WordPress blog software to bring you some tasty funk. This weeks’ theme is… well, there is no theme. I’m hittin’ you with some jams from a bunch of different genres, because we’re crazy like that around here.
So come on inside the club. (No sneakers, hats or gang colors!) We got some UK grime, electro, a bit of hip-hoppy dubstep, some D’n’B, Florida breaks, hipstery goof-electro, 90s French disco-house and Baltimore bass meets Gucci Mane. Plus whatever else I feel like adding later. Holla.
Feel free to bring your own tunes to the party. Just remember, DANCE MUSIC ONLY. If you post Barry Manilow, you will get the gasface.
