What Happened to the Original Marina on The Fresh Beat Band?

I wrote about the Fresh Beat Band/Music of Death last week and I did not mention the scandal. Yes, there is a scandal. During season one, the drummer, Marina, was played by Shayna Rose. Then, suddenly, in Season 2, she was replaced by Tara Perry. Some fans are super-angry about it.

Why did Shayna leave? Did she go Bananas? Did KiKi pull a Tanya Harding on her? Did she rebel against that horrid blue costume they forced her to wear? I like to think she came to her senses in the middle of a song one day and ran screaming out of the studio. The official line from the show is that she left to get married and pursue other projects. She has not appeared on gossip sites screaming about a conspiracy, so it’s unlikely that there is much of a scandal. Read more…

Album Review: Mumford & Sons’ Babel

Mumford & Sons - Babel

I was introduced to Mumford & Sons during the summer of 2010 while working as a defense contractor in Afghanistan. Stateside, Sigh No More was already a viral hit, but being overseas I hadn’t heard anything of the band until the economics podcast Planet Money used the single Little Lion Man as the intro music to one of their podcasts; I was instantly intrigued.  Continue reading

Saturday Night DJ Party: I’m In Miami Bitch Mix

My last few mixes have been a bit wacky and chaotic, so this time I decided to stop dicking around give you kids a mix of straight-up house beats. A bunch of great tracks have come out lately and I think this is my smoothest mix yet. Probably my favorite recent release is by the German group I’m Not a Band. Their album “Band Band” is fucking glorious, so I threw a bunch of their stuff in. Enjoy.  Continue reading

Freddie King is a rock god and you will bow down

I love road trips so much, but is there anything worse than the friend who brings along a wack-ass mixtape for the ride? With Labor Day weekend coming up and my own personal road trip in the works, I sat down to put together a playlist of the 15 Greatest Road Trip Songs of All Time.  Continue reading

‘Gangnam Style’ Gets the Grad School Dissertation Treatment

It’s not officially a pop-culture sensation until it’s had a grad school-style disseration written about it. So welcome to the canon, “Gangnam Style” — because The Atlantic published an article yesterday making the case that the insane/hysterical K-Pop bath salts hallucination video “is rich with subtle references that, along with the song itself, suggest a subtext with a surprisingly subversive message about class and wealth in contemporary South Korean society.” The article is fucking fascinating. Let’s learn a few things about “Gangnam Style” and the pudgy pop crooner PSY who wrote the song, directed the video and came up with those sweet, sweet dance moves.  Continue reading
