Today is Another Holiday: Public Domain Day

Public Domain Day is the first day of the year, every year. In Europe, Jan 1, 2013 is the day when hundreds of works are entering the public domain. Works including Grant Wood’s European Gothic, works by Edith Stein, Bruno Schulz and Franz Boas. Now, in the EU citizens can copy, share, or incorporate these works into digital archives at libraries, public or private. Artists can make versions of “European Gothic,” without asking permission or violating the law.  Continue reading

The year 2012 was the year of the trap. The term was seen everywhere this year — to describe not just the ATL-based hip-hop of 2Chainz and Future but also the dubstep and bass music scenes that were mixing crunked out hip-hop with dance music to come up with something new.

Here’s Your New Maria von Trapp! Carrie Underwood

No, NBC, you may not ruin The Sound of Music. But Haha! Who are we kidding? This is NBC we’re talking about. Today it was announced that NBC has cast country singer Carrie Underwood as Maria Von Trapp in their three-hour Sound of Music live broadcast. We assume this means Taylor Swift never made it to the top of their short list? Seems totally unlikely, we know. But maybe she was preoccupied house hunting for a place to live exactly seven inches away from her latest love interest. Continue reading

How to Survive the Next 14 Days of Waiting for the New Big Boi Album to Drop

You’ve been dealing with a heavy case of Outkast withdrawal lately. I know all about it. We’ve all been affected. After all, it’s been nine long years since the masterpiece double album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below came out and two years since Big Boi’s last solo joint (the incredibly dope Sir Luscious Leftfoot album).

Luckily Big Boi will release his new album Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors on Dec. 11.  But that’s two weeks of Outkast-related anticipation we have to deal with. Some of us aren’t up to it and will crack under the pressure, but I have a plan to get us through these troubling times.  Continue reading
