QOTD: Memories of Your First Car

firstcarqotdWhether or not you are a car nut, your first car meant a lot to you. Thinking back about it brings forth memories of cruising with your pals, that unfortunate fender bender, and your first run-in with the law.

My first car was an Isuzu Impulse. It was an Italian-designed Japanese hatchback. The cassette deck had a bitchin’ equalizer that lit up like a spaceship at night. Joe Isuzu went on TV and claimed that it was faster than a speeding bullet. I drove it during high school and as the Berlin Wall fell a half a world away, I cruised along the Pacific Coast Highway, listening to Jesus Jones. It had two bumper stickers– Public Enemy and Jerry Brown for President. Continue reading

Explainer: Twerking, Droppin’ it Like it’s Hot, Dippin’ it Low, Backin’ it Up Slow, Shawty Gettin’ Low Low

TwerkingOur very own alluson asked:

What’s the difference between twerking and dropping it like its hot?
Or dippin’ it low and backing it up slow?
Or shawty getting low low low when she’s wearing her boots with the fur?

As an expert on such subjects Ofkinheimer has produced the definitive guide on all such matters.

1. “Twerking” is just one continuous motion that primarily employs the lower back, pelvic and gluteal muscles. Dancers bend to their knees slightly, anchor their hands on knees and use to the lower back to ignite repetitive continuous movement around the midsection. The ideal position is similar to trying to take a shit in a public toilet and not wanting your ass to touch the nasty ass toilet. Envision this. See?! Once in this position, wave your ass around. The more fat you have around that general area, the more pronounced the jiggling is. Continue reading

QOTD: What Sports Team Would Your Neighborhood Be?

photo (2)NBC Universal acquired the rights to broadcast English Premier League (EPL) matches (that’s football, meaning soccer). To promote their broadcasts of the upcoming season, the network made an ad with NYC neighborhoods and boroughs broken down as EPL teams.

A larger version of the ad is here.

Clever, but the breakdown is…questionable.

So pick a place and a sport. Which teams would you match up to your town/city’s neighborhoods (or country’s states/regions)?

QOTD: Do You Have Your Own Hatfields and McCoys Family Feud Story?

A recent comment by BBQ got me thinking about family feuds. Long, bitter, too-often dragged out for discussion and hashed over yet again. Sometimes the re-hash is pretty much verbatim, sometimes it gets embellished.

My own half-sister won’t talk to me at all, not even one word, not even the one time we were in the same room together. Due to trouble between her and my parents, when I was ten. Continue reading

QOTD: What Are Your Favorite Summer Activities?

Lake_of_the_Woods_(Klamath_County,_Oregon_scenic_images)_(klaDA0170)For the last three years my main summer activities have been getting my ass kicked by the law and long distance moving. However, in my previous life, I preferred having my ass kicked by bodies of water or liberally coating myself in OFF and moving myself to a spot under the nearest tree where I would lay very still, and read everything I could get my hands on without a significant amount of effort, in between naps. If I won the Powerball tomorrow, that’s what my life would be for at least six months, water and literate sloth. Though I’d probably move off the ground and buy myself a hammock or an actual wood Adirondack chair. Continue reading

QOTD: How are you celebrating National Tequila Day?

1134221856_6a5bf69719Today is National Tequila Day and there are numerous ways you can help celebrate this important national holiday. Whether you are a straight up, on the rocks, in a cocktail or a frozen margarita kind of person, today is the day to show your support for this alcohol originating south of the border.

Tequila is a distilled beverage made from the blue agave plant. The most important thing to check when it comes to your tequila is that it is made with 100% agave. The other stuff is called mixtos and they are crap — loaded with sugars and added coloring. Mexican laws demand that the Tequila must be made in the state of Jalisco and a few other limited areas.

Check your labels and get your glasses.

There are five types of tequila: Continue reading

QOTD: What’s Your Extreme Weather Story?

When I was eight years old, my family spent the month of July visiting my stepfather’s parents on their farm outside of Wichita  Kansas. One evening, my sister and I were bathing, supervised by our mom. We had just noticed lighting through the bathroom window, when my step-grandmother burst into the bathroom grabbed my sister out of the tub and told my mom to wrap me in a towel and follow her. Continue reading
