Second Racist Verse, Same As The First Racist Verse

Another day, and we have yet another racist incident involving a fraternity and a viral video. When racist incidents happen on college campuses, we hear repeatedly how universities and colleges are supposed to be spaces of learning and enlightenment. In the case of the University of Oklahoma chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and the recent video of a racist chant, the university president David Boren released a statement about how “real Sooners” are not racist. Booting SAE off of the university’s campus “sends a signal” that the university community cannot and will not tolerate racist acts. Continue reading

Are Watermelon Oreos Racist?: A Thought Piece

Today seems like a good day to talk about race in America. (Every day is a good day to talk about race in America.) I saw Watermelon Oreos in the checkout line at Target yesterday. They made me feel weird. Is it the idea of the taste? The possible hydrogenated oil-mealy watermelon mouthfeel? Or…

Are Watermelon Oreos racist? I evaluate the evidence below. Continue reading

#NotYourMascot, #Not4Sale: Protesting Anti-Native Mascots

The recent and short-lived #CancelColbert campaign caused much controversy over whether the joke was offensive to Asian-Americans.  Lost in the #CancelColbert fervor was the fact that Colbert’s joke meant to mock Dan Snyder’s Original Americans Foundation, widely thought to be a PR tactic to appease Native Americans and others who oppose the name “Washington Redskins.” Continue reading

A White Gay Adult Film Star Shares His Poorly Formed Views on Racism

The world of gay porn will never be accused of being socially forward. It is a field of entertainment that caters to men’s sexual desires/fantasies, and isn’t generally concerned with social issues. After all, one watches pornography in order to experience sexual stimulus, not to engage in social critique. However, like every other cultural production, pornography is shaped by social forces and contributes to particular kinds of discourses, like race and racism. What makes all this interesting (at least to me) is when a porn “model” (that’s the word they’re using these days) decides to comment on racial diversity, the lack thereof, and “types.” What follows is usually a Sharknado-level crapstorm. Paula Deen’s Supporters Take to Food Network’s Facebook Page; Hilarity Ensues

For those of you living under a rock for the last 72 hours or so, you may be unaware that the Food Network has fired Paula Deen for admitting during a deposition to making racist and anti-Semetic jokes, using the N-word, and planning an Antebellum Southern Plantation-style wedding.

Paula Deen has many fans, and they have taken to Food Network’s Facebook page to protest Paula’s firing. Their comments are hilariously awful. These are their stories. Continue reading

Is This New Volkswagen Super Bowl Ad Using “Blackface With Voices?”

New York Times columnist Charles Blow thinks so. On a segment with CNN this is what he said regarding Volkswagen’s new ad set to air this weekend. CNN however in the title of their segment doesn’t go quite that far. They ask if the commercial is funny or awkward, opting to shy away from other commentary that asks if the commercial is blatantly racist. Continue reading

As the Election Heats Up the Racists Take their Cue

We’ve apparently reached the part of the 2012 election where all the racist assheads emerge from the shadows in full bigoted regalia.

While not surprising, it does just make us….well, what? What does this particular demonstration make us feel? This may seem like an easy question, but maybe it isn’t so easy. Is it enraging? Sure. But by this point it’s also so cliché and mundane that it’s almost like expecting the jerk after the tap on the knee. It’s not that we thought these folks went anywhere after the 2008 election. No, of course not. Due to the Tea Party, which has been noticeably absent during much of the 2012 campaign, we saw the many, many, racist signs and slogans and t-shirts and whatever the first time around. So, where has this guy been? Continue reading

Incredibly Racist National Review Writer John Derbyshire Fired

National Review editor Rich Lowry announced yesterday that writer John Derbyshire has been fired. Derbyshire, who came under fire this week for an amazingly racist article in a web magazine, has lost his position at NR for advising people, among other things, that “If planning a trip to a beach or amusement park at some date, find out whether it is likely to be swamped with blacks on that date (neglect of that one got me the closest I have ever gotten to death by gunshot).” Continue reading
