Your 2014 Emmy Nominations

The Emmy nominations were announced earlier today, and we can assure you that some(one) or thing that really deserves to be on this list was snubbed (ORPHAN BLACK). This year it was the veritable YEAR OF THE EMMY SNUBS! (ORPHAN BLACK)

No, seriously, who is still watching Modern Family? You’d think a new show hasn’t aired in the last ten years what with people from Modern Family just standing around waiting to collect awards while screaming the mirthless screams of the anointed insane, but rewarded in knee-jerk fashion anyway. And Claire Danes, she of the Crumple Face Crying Factory and Haunted Doll Emporium, will attempt to wave hello at Robin Wright, who will flip a supremely cut wedge of blonde perfection out of her eye as she pins her with a withering gaze, while Lizzy Caplan looks around nervously, and Kerry Washington sashays away pointedly and smiling knowingly at Julianna Margulies who wonders why Michelle Dockery keeps coming to these things when even Maggie Smith never shows up. ALL OF THIS WILL HAPPEN AT THE EMMY NOMINATIONS LUNCHEON of which Tatiana Maslany of Orphan Black will not be attending. From what we’re reading, Maslany and Orphan Black have been shut out because the show deals with unwieldy and possibly politically controversial topics such as cloning and, we dunno, badass women who can divide themselves into several different roles and be fantastic at all of them? Is the GOP itself part of the Emmy voting block? And lest we forget, shows about zombies and Dothraki maidens walking around with dragons have made their way to the Emmy list recently so, uh, do us a favor and “get out of here” with that “fantasy doesn’t play well to television viewership” garbage.

Let’s also talk about Matt LeBlanc for a second. Have we missed something? When did he become an Emmy nomination staple? We’ve seen this little show, Episodes, and while marginally entertaining, we’re not really understanding the omnipresent LeBlanc representation at the Emmy show and international cook off. We get it. He was sorely underrated on Friends. Now that we’ve established that can we move on? The same with Ricky Gervais who just reviles us unendingly and whenever we watch him we keep wondering when Louis C.K. or somebody, anybody funnier and less loathsome will show up. Andy Samberg, for one, you were snubbed here by these two Emmy seat fillers.

Anyway, there will be a lot of talk about the rise of a few of the new shows and other interesting television ideas of late and how they’re finally making some headway into the awards categories; including American Horror Story: Coven, Fargo, Orange is the New Black, Shameless, Sherlock, and True Detective. Critics will also weigh in on Netflix and its ability to create the kind of programming that most of us really want to see and the fact NBC is still mostly a network that records people sleeping and puts them on air for mass viewing. We’re wondering if NBC passed on The Leftovers? We mean, if we’re talking about NyQuil filmed as a television program…
