QOTD: What is One Household Rule You Had Growing Up That You Still Don’t Agree With?

obey

Growing up in the McBoy household there were a lot of rules, most of which disappeared when I turned 15. Some were good and made sense to a child others still stick in my craw.

The two rules that still bother me the most involve television. One was that TVs were not allowed in the bedroom. Til the day my father died, he refused to have one anywhere outside of the living room. It’s so ingrained in me that as an adult I have never had a television anywhere but in the living area of any of the houses or apartments I have lived in.

The other was that I was only allowed to watch 6 hours of television a week. The only thing that didn’t count towards the 6 hours was the news. Otherwise if the television was on it counted towards the time. The man even kept a list in the house of what I watched when. When asked about it he used to tell me that he would prefer me reading than watching television which made sense at the time but it sure lead me to be something of an outsider in elementary school who had no idea of what was going on in popular culture. This rule was relaxed when I moved back to the States in high school. I gorged on TV. I loved television. I watched so much of it that I can probably still recite a lot of the lines from NBC’s Must See TV’s Thursday night line up. This habit didn’t go away until I went six weeks without power post Katrina.

So Crassers, what is one household rule you had growing up that you still don’t agree with?
