What You Can Still Do

Obama Getting Out the Vote

Okay, you got up early and voted. You’ve had your coffee and you’re already thinking about opening that bottle of Wild Turkey because there are hours and hours until they call this thing and the misery of this never ending campaign is over.

Rather than spend the whole day hitting the Refresh button on CNN.com or, god forbid, watching cable news all day, you can still make a difference by doing last-minute GOTV (get out the vote) activities.

At this stage in the campaign, there is no persuading undecided voters or arguing the finer points of your guy’s position. It’s time to make sure every last registered supporter gets to the polls. It’s all about turnout. It ain’t over until it’s over, and you really could make a difference. Remember that in 2000 we ended up with George Bush by a few hundred votes.

If you walk into your local campaign office, a very enthusiastic young person will leap on you and thrust a list of carefully winnowed names, phone numbers, and addresses. They will want you to call people in swing states. If you happen to be in a swing state, they will have piles and piles of door hangers that tell specific people exactly where to go vote. And they need YOU to run around and hang them on their doors.

The campaigns have spent the last several weeks identifying people who may need a ride to their polling station, and they may press you into service if you are willing to help someone who cannot get there alone.

If you are not anywhere near a campaign office, you can call swing voters from the comfort of your own home or the break room at your office at lunchtime.

And don’t forget to post, tweet, and tell people you voted.

There’s plenty of time to join in. Tick, tick, tick.

Oh, and here’s RMoney’s site if you are that way inclined.
