Do We Really Care if John Travolta is Gay?

For the last 48 hours the blogosphere has been humming with reports of Travolta being awash with gay as various massage therapists come forward and accuse the Stayin Alive star of sexual misconduct. Well, in evaluating the scandal (Egads!) and the graphic nature of the tales, is this really about justice, or the umpteenth attempted outing of Vinnie Barbarino?

Now, we’re not saying that Travolta shouldn’t answer for any illegal misconduct if he’s found guilty of it, but the continued media firestorm about his supposed exploits and all the proof of such man diddling, seems to be leading to just one place. Apparently what everyone seems to want is for Travolta to come forward and say that he is in fact gay, and that he’s been living a lie, that his wife and his children have been covering for him, and that he’s been a naughty boy because of it. But you know what? I for one, don’t care. I’ve never cared. I don’t feel betrayed or lied to or even angry that a former heartthrob maybe, probably, likes boys. You know why? It’s none of my business, for one. For the other reason, what impact on my life does it have? None. Is it old news that celebrities have opposite sex spouses, yet may prefer those of the same sex? Yes.

It all just seems a little, well, sad. The rumor mill is running rampant about a possible ex-communication from Scientology which has allowed for the scandal to get so close to the actor, or possibly some sort of meltdown on Travolta’s part. Regardless, on the face of it, the lawsuits seem pretty frivolous and primed to cause as much embarrassment as possible. The pictures here on TMZ look horrendously faked. So, sigh. Do what you will, media, I guess. But just as long as we all know it’s not really about seeking to right a wrong, but to splash Travolta all over the cover of every tabloid, and every gossip blog including, Radar, TMZ, and Gawker, among others. Can we blame him for being a celebrity who has possibly remained in the closet for too long? If you must. Is it his responsibility to tell the entire world about his sexual orientation as well as any and all sexual proclivities? Who says?

So, what’s the endgame here, massage therapists, eh? A cool $2 million and a book deal?

Much like the first defendant, the second masseur seeks $2 million. Both men are being represented by the same lawyer and are alleging sexual battery and sexual harassment.

Yeah, that’s probably it.

Maybe if we all simultaneously post the “No 1 Curr” gif this will recede back into the salacious, snaky, viper pit from whence it came.
