Oscar Fashion Preview

By Missing Peace and Dancing Queen

The red carpet at the Oscars is the biggest runway/fashion event in the world. Given that, designers begin clawing their way to the nominees’ stylists to make them this year’s risk-takers or safe players. Last year, red was the color (how original). What will be this year’s big trend?

Best Actress Nominee Viola Davis has quite a few things going for her. She has an amazing smile, a fantastic figure, and some glorious decolletage. Her style choices over the award season have run the full gamut from total bore at the Golden Globes, to a real eye-popper at the NAACP image awards.

Let’s hope she chooses some thing more like this Marchesa gown she floated in on at the Screen Actors Guild awards. The gold and white combination is perfect on her skin and there’s not too much meringue in the skirt.

Of course, Miss Meryl Streep is always a fashion wild card but can look stunning when not trying so hard to be different. Yes, we know she’s Meryl, but she can be more Helen Mirren than what is this I don’t even.

Another woman of a certain age, Glenn Close will face the “should I or should I not cover my arms” question. Covered is how she answered the question for this year’s Globes. Whatever she does, let’s hope it is not this and is instead, more of this, which was shockingly from the same event.

There are several new faces to this year’s red carpet in nominees Octavia Spencer (girl, the color and style make you look too old), Melissa McCarthy (color looked flat in the photos). Based on their past choices, nominees Rooney Mara and Berenice Bejo will likely fight it out for the risk-taker award.

Nominee Jessica Chastain has been all over the map. The sleek blue Calvin Klein suited her and helped her stand out on the carpet but it’s not an Oscar dress. However, the styling was the best so far.

What to do, what to do, what to do about Michelle Williams and her red carpet fashion. We had this disaster last year at the Globes to this improved but demure number at last year’s Oscars. She is staying with the demure look again this year with this and this (TOO SHORT!) which, okay we get it. But some Mila Kunis va-va-voom might not hurt every once in a while.

There are men who attend these things, too. If only they could all look like Best Actor nominee Jean Dujardin or perennial red carpet swoonfest and nominee George Clooney (ditch the chick, George).

Got to give a shout-out to Bridesmaids star, Maya Rudolph who looked gorgeous and effortless at this year’s Globes. Not sure if it’s her new husband or this but Reese Witherspoon had a new look this year that we haven’t seen with her before.

When we need to turn up the heat, you can count on everyone’s favorite hot mamma Sophia Vergara or Leggy McLegerson to do the trick.

Emma Stone looked all grown up at the Globes this year. Perhaps too much so.

Then of course, there is always this couple which can make the carpet explode while simultaneously and nonchalantly sucking the life out of all in attendance.
