Zappos.com Accounts Hacked

If you use the popular shopping site zappos.com, you have an email coming your way letting you know that your account has been compromised. Hackers were able to access customer names, email addresses, shipping and billing address and the last four digits of credit card numbers. They were also able to access customer passwords, although those were encrypted. The little bit of good news is that if you stored your full credit card number on the site, Zappos stored that information separately.

Not surprisingly, Zappos is requiring customers to change their passwords on zappos.com. If customers use the same password on other sites, it’s a good idea to change the password on those sites as well.

Known for its great customer service, Zappos is taking the odd step of turning off their phone lines during this crisis. From msnbc.com:

“Due to the volume of inquiries we are expecting, we realized that we could serve the most customers by answering their questions by email,” Hsieh said in a note to employees, also posted on the firm’s Web page. “We have made the hard decision to temporarily turn off our phones and direct customers to contact us by email because our phone systems simply aren’t capable of handling so much volume. (If 5% of our customers call, that would be over 1 million phone calls, most of which would not even make it into our phone system in the first place).”

Hopefully they can answer those emails fast enough so as to not ruin their great reputation.
