Nerd-Nirvana: There’s a Monster Convention You Probably Don’t Know About!

You know one thing Zombies don’t currently have? Well, they own all of Hollywood, that’s for sure. And, yawr, they’re pretty popular in books too. And, yes, also, some of us may have zombie apocalypse survival kits. What?! It’s not just me. Anyway, now zombies will have their own convention. Like for serious, guys.

Todd Masters, an Emmy-winning visual effects artist, and Bruce Haring of JM Northern Media are putting on the “Aliens to Zombies” Convention at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, CA, Oct 21-22.
There will be book authors speaking about monster things, movie and television folks discussing zombie plagues and alien attacks, and special effects guys doing makeup stuff and everything! And the names of the panels are awesome:

  • Aliens Keynote
  • Writing About the End – Zombie Apocalypse!
  • Aliens Among Us
  • Pro Monster-Maker Halloween Challenge – Hollywood’s top monster-makers are challenged to make a monster from simple household materials.
  • The Cinema’s Simians: Monkey Men of the Movies
  • A Werewolf’s Bane – Howling to The Underworld
  • Zombies Keynote – Michael Rooker, actor, “The Walking Dead”

Personally, if they don’t discuss the dichotomy of the “fast zombie” vs. the “slow zombie” and the lethal implications of the two, then frankly I won’t think this is money well spent.

And finally, and this is probably the best part ever…THE ALIENS TO ZOMBIES MONSTERS BALL – The Professional Monster-Makers Halloween Bash. Oh, there will probably be so much latex and corn syrup. Yay!

Can you expect there to be people milling around as zombies? I would think that’s a given. Will someone perhaps try to gnaw on your arm while you wait to hear about zombie plagues, well, that could happen, I suppose. Would it be inappropriate to locate several items in the facility that one could turn into a zombie killing instrument, like perhaps a fire extinguisher fused to a lead pipe with duct tape? Yes? Whatever. You can’t stop me. Anyway, this may be a really fantastic thing!

Anybody out there in the Los Angeles area — who has a love of zombies — see if you can go and report back! I would totally do it if I didn’t live on the stupid East Coast or if (Crasstalk paid for my airfare), but you know, sounds fun!
