The Meat Commission Mixtape 2010

Gather round kids and peep a few of my favorite tracks from 2010. In no particular order.

“For Yo Sorrows” by Big Boi Feat. Too Short and George Clinton. Love that dubstep-ish beat and you absolutely CANNOT go wrong with a Too $hort cameo.

“Mixin Up The Medicine” by Yelawolf Feat. Juelz Santana
Yelawolf is a skinny white kid from Alabama who bumps Beanie Siegel in his truck because “Lynyrd Skynyrd didn’t sing about slingin’ keys of coke.” Somehow it all works.

“Bumble” by Rx (Tony Rocky Horror Remix)

“Dancing On My Own” by Robyn (Fred Falke Remix)
There were about a billion different remixes of this song off the Body Talk Pt. 1 album. This one really captures the feeling of what it’s like to lose yourself in a club while the dj drops the beats.

“Dancehall Queen” by Robyn
So what if Diplo more or less jacked his sound from Jamaican producers. This is the perfect summer pop song.

“The Island Part 2” by Pendulum
Until this year Pendulum, an Australian group, was known for putting out some slick drum and bass. Then they dropped The Island Part 2 and proved they can do electro-house, too.

“Animal Animal” by Penguin Prison

“As We Enter” by Damian Marley and Nas
Their album together was pretty disappointing but this song just does it for me. Kind of reminds me slightly of “Gravel Pit” by Wu-Tang.

“Coast to Coast” by Matrix and Futurebound
Drum and bass that actually has soul and personality and sounds like it was made by human beings instead of robots. Yum.

“Monster” by Kanye West feat. Jay-Z and Nicky Minaj
Nicky steals the show on this one.

“Who Will Survive in America?” by Kanye West and Gil Scott Heron

“Unleash My Love” by John DeSohn feat. Christina Skaar
This is the most euro-trashy song on this list, but I don’t care. This one will have the guidos fist-pumping EVERY time.

“Susie Cues” by Javelin
Javelin is this quirky little electro act that puts out these crazy, cut-up songs. They remind me slightly of The Avalanches in that all of their stuff is basically a collage of sounds they found elsewhere and put back together in new ways. Check them out.

“Wondaland” by Janelle Monae
If I hear one more hipster hate on Janelle Monae… I will get all stabby.

“One Life Stand” by Hot Chip
Do you think Hot Chip has groupies? They seem WAY too dorky for that sort of thing. But who knows.

“Die Slow” by HEALTH (Tobacco remix)

“On Melancholy Hill” by Gorillaz
Anyone who knows me knows I’m absolutely obsessed with Gorillaz. This has to be maybe the most creative video of the whole year.

“Stylo” by Gorillaz
And this is the second greatest video of 2010.

“Alive” by Goldfrapp

“Oh No” by Girl Talk
In 10 or 20 years, when music fans look back at the song that finally made the mash-up seem legit, I think this will be the one.

“Don’t Waste It” by Dead Prez
The DPs grab a beat from that dumbass “Rockstar” song and flip the script.

“Cooler Couleur” by Crookers Feat. Yelle
My French girlfriend singing on a beat from the Italian producers Crookers. The lyrics are about her love for BMCFC. Seriously. Look it up in Babelfish.

“The Dub in Me” by Corporate Thugs Feat. Big Omeezy
I’ve never been to the East Bay, but if I ever roll through Oak Town, I’m bumping this.

“Satisfied” by Cee Lo Green
This song has what HAS to be the greatest hook of any song that came out this year. I want to hire his backup singers to follow me around all day and perform that chorus. I feel like I could basically take over the world with them belting out that shit behind me.

“Crimson Skies” by The Budos Band
The Budos Band has built up a decent following by basically making every single tune sound like it came from the soundtrack to one of the Dirty Harry movies. Not a bad recipe when you really think about it.

“Bass Head” by Bassnectar
Bassnectar is one of the rare American dubstep producers worth checking out.

“Mama She Don’t Like You” by Alborosie feat. I Eye
Alborosie is an Italian guy who had been playing in a fairly popular Italian reggae band. Then a few years back he split and moved to Kingston to pursue a career in Jamaica’s cutthroat reggae industry. Somehow he succeeded and is considered a legit star, not a novelty act like most white reggae singers (with the other notable exception being Collie Buddz).
